poem v 1

earlier this week, after a delightful evening of watching a community theatre production of oscar wilde's "an ideal husband," the group of us who went decided to start a poetry club!  i'm so glad they liked the idea, because it's something i've wanted to read more of and to understand better.

this morning, the 4 of us ate delicious pumpkin pancakes and discussed pablo neruda's poem "if you forget me."
read it. discuss it with friends. let me know what you think!

If You Forget Me by Pablo Neruda
I want you to know
one thing.

You know how this is:
if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.

Well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.

If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.

If you think it long and mad,
the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
and you decide
to leave me at the shore
of the heart where I have roots,
that on that day,
at that hour,
I shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off
to seek another land.

if each day,
each hour,
you feel that you are destined for me
with implacable sweetness,
if each day a flower
climbs up to your lips to seek me,
ah my love, ah my own,
in me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
without leaving mine

a blog post in 4 sections

4 small thoughts:

dear everything i own,

please stop disappearing. i want you.

my last few books have all inadvertently focused on southern black girls who experience all sorts of horrible things.  consequently, my dreams have been not so happy.  i would greatly appreciate suggestions of uplifting alternatives to read next.

i had a cambridge moment today.  as i was walking up to campus, my attention was grabbed by a male student.  not because he was especially handsome, but because he was crossing the lawn.  i had to squander my instinct to shout out in warning, "stop! the porters! they'll chase you!"

and of course,
some pretty photos
{or "fotos" if we are being parker circa 2004-2006}

better than fhe

any night that includes oscar wilde, beautiful friends, and frosties at the ever elusive draper wendy's is a good night.

breakfast and art

mary and i went and got breakfast at magleby's this morning! i'd woken up about half an hour before and could hardly speak english, yet despite all that i was still able to steer the conversation towards art.  the topic came up of what my favorite piece is. i don't know if any of you have had the massive french toast breakfast with strawberries and cream, but honestly, the only piece i could think of was this:

{venus of willendorf24,000 B.C.E– 22,000 B.C.E.}

i guess just really spoke to me...

"tact" is not the name of this post

if i told you it's for a good cause, would you give me lots and lots of money?

to make up for that little social blunder, here are some pictures i like {since saying that you should like what i like is certainly no faux pas}:

riddle me this:

how am i not supposed to take "i'd rather work and hang out with my parents than spend time with you doing something we both have talked multiple times about how much we want to do it" personally?

also, a guy i know was recently talking to a friend of mine.  she asked him what his romantic type was, and one of the first things on his list was "she can be stupid."

male gender win!

latest obsession:

there's been a fair amount of wedding talk in my apartment lately.  it was bound to happen, what with monica's sister being engaged and us having thrown a bachelorette party this weekend. that, and 3 of my favorite cambridge couples got engaged recently!! {public shout out to christina & jordan, alex & jared, and hwanhi & nate}

so of course i've been researching/admiring wedding photographers online. because let's be honest, the photographer is probably second only to the groom in importance level on wedding day.

i have a great number of favorite photographers. too many, in fact, that i don't dare to start listing them lest i forget one. instead, let's just add one more.

{anyone else getting a rodney smith vibe?}

ok, sorry, had to get the provo girl out of me. actually, no. no apologies. there is nothing wrong with l o v e.

seductive fruits

so my friends alex, geoff, and i have had this ongoing debate as to what the most seductive fruit is.  they both insist it's peaches; i, that it's anything but.

after work, i went to my gramma's house for dinner with her and my mom. we had peaches for dessert, which got me thinking about this question.  wanting to know which fruit my grandmother thought would fit, i asked her opinion.

her response?

"the most seductive fruit? well, that's passion fruit of course."

bam! those boys were roasted by my 85-year-old gramma.

do you think strawberries are the most seductive? apples? cherries? something else entirely? post below and let me know!

30 strangers 2011

i hope that all of you who read my blog are by now familiar with justin hackworth.  seem a little hazy? he's the one who photographed my grandmother, mother, sister, and me last year.

30 Strangers by Justin Hackworth

well guess what! justin's at it again this year, and from now until march 8 at midnight, you can comment on his post for a chance to be selected for the 2011 exhibition. even better, you'll be supporting a cause {other than increasing your awesomeness}: the center for women & children in crisis
