Holden

My mama and I took my grandmother to her hometown of Holden, Utah this fall.  We visited her old farm home and the cemetery, and I learned all sorts of stories about my relatives.

Cambridge Christmas Party

We had our annual Cambridge Christmas party at the Bruton's lovely home sometime after both Christmas and the New Year.  I got to meet some new nephews!  A blast as always; I love my people.

Cornbelly's

Sometime during the Great Blogging Blackout of 2014, Sam, Kristie, and I went to Cornbelly's.  We rocked the corn maze, I ran into an old friend, and we played chess.  Oh, and we also ate some amazing funnel cake.

Side Note

This is the worst time in my entire life to have writer's block.  It is literally my only responsibility to be writing essays right now.  And I can't write anything a quarter-way decent (what I wouldn't give to be able to write something half-way decent).  I can't seem to be able to translate the ideas in my head to paper.  I can talk about them, which is reassuring, but I can not, for the life of me, write about them.  So yeah, that's frustrating.

Any tips on overcoming major writer's block?

River

I met my cousin's cute bebe named River this weekend- he is an adorable tiny old man, I love him.

My other cousin was in town-- her boy Roman is not even three years old, but he is OBSESSED with the cello.  Here he is with Carson's cello.  The look on Roman's face, the bow tie, the foot... it's all so priceless!

Happy Birthday, Stephanie!

Stephanie had a birthday last week, hooray!  There was a party to celebrate her angelic goodness, and I was in charge of bringing balloons.  I am proud to report that only one of them popped in my car and I was able to turn down the advances of the guy at the grocery store who filled them up ("I'm only working here because I wanted a change from the restaurant industry.")

Don't worry, DJ & I already discussed how that Nike shirt is not appropriate for a king.

I really wish Stephanie weren't blurry in the above picture!  But she is still a vision.

Books + Art = One Dreamy Mural

I've been wanting to check out this mural outside of a bookshop since Grace posted a picture by it a few years ago.  I'm so happy that I was able to track it down!

Also, actual thing I heard a college sophomore girl say at the store: "I'm just looking for a nihilistic, minimalistic work of fiction!  Is that so hard?"

Eddie Redmayne is the perfect man.  Add the Cambridge backdrop (my backdrop!) and I'm done for.

Yep, I'm a non-teenager (well beyond my teenage years, thankyouverymuch), and I am posting this.

New Year's Eve Party

I co-hosted a NYE Party this year with Stephanie, and it was awesome!  I only had about 47 hours to pull it all together, and there was an hour on Tuesday (the day before) where four hundred people were invited, but luckily we worked some damage control and slimed that invite list back down.  Strangely, 23 hours notice for 400 people isn't really my jam.  But we had the perfect number of guests, the people who I wanted to come came, the decorations were beautiful (even though there are like no pictures of them), there was more than enough food, and people seemed to enjoy themselves.  It was a hostess's dream!

Some of my DC friends were there, and they followed the dress code, and I was happy!!! Side note, Utah: Dressing up is not hard, it's actually fun.  You should try it.

I also wore a shiny gold dress, wore tiny hats, and ate midnight waffles.  So yeah, 2015 is going to be hecka great.

NYE

I only edited that first picture so let's just accept it for what it is and move on, okay?

In The Spirit Of Honesty

I just googled "Harry Styles man bun"... and I don't feel at all bad about it.

Hey, sometimes you need to decompress from stressing over writing the perfectly professional and academic email to a complete stranger.

Oh Hello There

As I imagine what I look like writing this (I know I could look in a mirror and just know what I look like while writing this, but we're talking about the glorified and perfectly lit movie-version of my life here, so I'm forced to imagine it), I look both sheepish and like Beyonce.  You know what I mean?  Slightly sheepish because, hey, I haven't written for three months (three months!!!).  Like Beyonce because, hey, I ain't never gonna apologize for my feelings.

I don't think it's going to come as any surprise to anyone, but it has been so hard here in Utah.  It's been a weird combination of seemingly endless culture shock, feeling blue, having a hard time making friends, and not remembering how to interact with people.  Like really- how do I interact with people?  How do I make the words into the sentences and simultaneously express emotion on my face and also intonation? I promise I'm not actually an Ice Queen.

But yesterday I got my haircut, and on some weird level that means I'm actually here.  I have a new dry cleaner, a few new callings, and now I have a new hairdresser.  There's no avoiding it anymore.

I'm rediscovering my momentum to work on my grad school apps, and I know I need this space to help me with that.  I certainly can't write my bajillion essays if I'm out of practice writing here.  So it's time to warm up my typing fingers and get my creative juices flowing.  No promises for how often or how happy, but I do promise to do more, to be better.

It's nice to see you again.
